To begin
- Start in a modern browser with internet access. The opening explanations need no programming experience or software installation.
- Use a laptop or desktop with a keyboard for real coding and system labs. A phone can help you read, but does not replace the computer used in the practical work.
Later tools, hardware and costs
- The taught Windows-first route uses Windows 11 with WSL 2 and Ubuntu. Real installation needs a compatible computer and permission to install. Follow the setup checks before making changes; browser terminal models are demonstrations, not an installed Linux system.
- Later administration, services, containers, networking and recovery labs need the specific disposable local environment described in the lab. Practise with invented files and recoverable backups, not a live server. No dedicated GPU is required.
Setup gates in learning order
- Before administration rather than file practice
- Use the full disposable VM recipe in linux-02-01 for system services, snapshots and console recovery. WSL/file practice is not proof of VM boot or network administration. Record actual host/guest free space and memory before downloading; existing reference budgets are course planning figures, not universal minima.
- Before two-host or specialist work
- Construct and identify both private guests before SSH/firewall/NFS work. Stop if you lack install authority, console recovery or a known clean snapshot. GPU, clusters and cloud-init require additional named environments and are not required to prove the bounded core operations capstone.
Accounts, internet and costs
No paid AI API, hosting plan, domain or subscription is needed to begin. Downloads use internet data. Later public hosting, commercial services or cloud/GPU rental can cost money: choose them separately, never as an automatic course step.
Requirements come from the supplied exercises, not a tested minimum-PC specification. Before a larger lab, check its own tools, available disk space and memory. Installation and real-machine success are not proved by completing a browser demonstration.
